Friday, May 23rd 2008: Under the KUSP (Kolkata Urban Service for the Poor) program, SUDA (State Urban Development Agency) & The NIS Academy, a division of NIS Sparta Ltd. have joined hands to promote livelihoods of the underprivileged in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area.

This is a pilot initiative to train-and-place the unemployed urban youths from marginalized sections of society into retail sector. Three municipalities namely Madhyamgram, Barrackpore and Kamarhati have been selected for this project and the training has been launched. The 100 unemployed youths have been selected in consultation with the municipalities from amongst 2500 approx. applications.

Speaking on the tie-up, Mr. Manoj Chawla, Senior Vice President, The NIS Academy, said, “The NIS Academy has created a customized training program and used its extensive expertise in the Learning and Training solutions domain to conduct a pilot training program for 100 unemployed youths and provide placement assistance to the successfully trained candidates in the retail sector.”

After the initial screening, around 350 candidates underwent a written test and personal interview. The completion and successful placement of the candidates would open doors for livelihood for unemployed youths belonging to the underprivileged sections of other ULBs. KUSP and SUDA sees this as an opportunity to develop participatory and inclusive livelihood promotion through professional knowledge and skill development for the marginalized and unemployed youths in West Bengal’.
